No trailer power when connected to the truck hitch. Why?

Umm... You do realize that you MUST have fully charged batteries CONNECTED to your trailer ANY TIME you venture out on public roads?

The reason for this is the trailer battery(ies) are SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE POWER FOR THE BREAK AWAY SYSTEM.

By not having a charged battery attached to the trailers electrical system your break away system will FAIL to operate once the trailer to TV cable disconnects if for any reason your trailer fully breaks away from the TV.

This IS a Federal requirement and IS enforced by all states (yeah I know, TEXAS doesn't obey any Fed laws :R :h).

It is not only a safety item for your sake but also ALL of the motorists on the public roads.

The break away system is required to not only STOP the trailer from rolling but alos HOLD the trailer in place for a minimum of 10 minutes.

It is there for everyones safety, USE IT.

Not only use it, CHECK IT EVERY TIME YOU HOOK UP to tow.

When hooked up, simply pull the plunger, then try pulling forward, the brakes MUST lock and you will slide all tires.

If the brakes fail to activate DO NOT TOW UNTIL YOU HAVE LOCATED AND REPAIRED THE PROBLEM.

Also the trailer battery may need to be in the trailer for the 12v systems to work.....My slides will not work with the trailer battery out it may be the same for the jack...........

Also some tow vehicles have separate fuses for the trailer plug....

First if all. Thanks for all the post with possible solutions to my problem. Y'all are so cool about sharing information on here. That's why I have been a member on here for the past few years and I have learned some much from y'all.

Tomorrow I plan on going thru my fuses in my truck to make sure I didn't blow any of those causing his problem and then I'll go over to the storage lot to look for an online fuse on my trailer like y'all have suggested. I just love solving the problem myself and saving some money thanks to y'all.

Also, I have learns a lesson too. I admit I didn't know about the battery powering the breakaway cable. Thanks for bring it up and letting me know. Graphically as it was explained, I got the message. Nuff said.

Y'all are great. I can't wait to start the camping season. Our first outing is scheduled for Father's Day. I already have 3 camping gripes scheduled this summer, probably 3 more in there somewhere. ??

I'd check the fuse box on your TV. I had that happen to me this spring. Had to pull the TH out of the parking spot to air up the tires. Didn't bring a battery. After driving it around the lot I realized my TH battery cables were flopping around. Sure enough nothing on the TH worked. Pos must have grounded to the frame. After looking into it. I found a fuse in my TV had blown. $3-4 later, back in business.
Before I get beaten up on this post as well, I only drove it around the parking lot without a battery.

I had the same problem on my 2005 Cherokee. The fuse others have mentioned was attached to the frame at the front of the camper. Other people called it a short stop. Mine did not have a reset button and had to be replaced. $3-$4 at autozone.

I Would check your truck electrical. My truck came with a separate fuse and relay for the trailer power supply. If the battery leads shorted you may have blown the fuse

Years ago near Pittsburgh PA an entire FAMILY including kids was KILLED after an 3,000 lb chipper broke away from the truck (chipper was improperly secured and was not required to have brakes). The chipper DEMOLISHED the van the family was riding in, imagine what would happen with YOUR trailer rolling away out of control. Why take the chance?

Power tongue jacks are normally connected directly to the battery. No battery, no jack.
