Noria - Possible Low Wattage AC Unit

I've been keeping my eye on this Kickstarter project for the last two years. So far I'm giving it about a 50/50 chance of actually shipping as it has been significantly delayed at this point.

That being said, if this pans out, I'm seriously considering designing a casing on it that would allow it to mount in place of my current AC setup. What I like about this unit is how compact it is, especially with how short it is. It isn't designed for the rigors of RV travel but for the price, it's certainly something worth playing with. It's designed to run on 500w of power so it's within reach of being able to run only on solar power. I don't think I would replace a viable working AC unit with something like this but if I had a dead AC unit and was looking at alternatives this might come to the top of the list.

Anyway, aside from this thing probably never shipping, what are your thoughts on this or something similar being adapted for campers?
  • How much window AC cost those days?
Just 2 days ago I have seen one on minivan (!). They stay on RV site, hook up the power, stick AC in sliding door, cover the rest with tarp and voila-la.
    Cool place to sleep.
  • I can't even get to the website. My browser is saying that I misspelled the URL, even if I go to google and look it up there.

For a long time I tried to figure out where I could mount my little 5000BTU window unit in my TC. My Honda eu1000i could run it with ease, and I really think it would have worked well.

If this could be made to work as a rooftop unit, I could be tempted to pull the roof unit that I now have and replace it with this.
  • All of the advantages I see for this have to do with window mounting- I see no advantage for an RV- nothing that would not be addressed by a standard roof mount controlled by a smart thermostat.

That would work say in the cab over bunk at night with the privacy curtains drawn. I saw that a while ago somewhere else, cannot remember where though.

I cooled my 74' KIT using a 5500 BTU window unit modified to fit permanently into a wall. It only had trouble when the temps got up above 95 degrees in direct sun due to the 3/4" thick walls.

  • If 5000 btu would be enough, I think it would be a great fit for RV's.
I can imagine using it just for a bedroom or using several of them to spread the cool evenly without the wastefull, inefficient duscting.
  • If you need a hobby, it would be fine. My normal ac is OK though.
