Years ago I was talking to a friend who was an engineer for Ford in the UK. I mentioned how I was impressed that a rental Ford Taurus' temperature gauge sat completely central while going up a steep dirt road in Death Valley in summer with the aircon on full. He admitted they do jig their gauges so they read optimum until the temperature exceeds a certain level. So what you say about the pressure gauge makes sense.
