IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ALL FORD OWNERS, ESPECIALLY F150: Before you go off on the brake controller, know that Ford has an ongoing problem with their built in brake controller. I have a new airstream with a similar problem. I am constantly getting a "trailer disconnected" message. Yet the brake lights and running lights work.
According to the dealer, a former Ford employee I know and, another non-Airstream dealer, the trailer is recognizing the truck, thus the working lights on the trailer. But, the truck keeps forgetting that the trailer is there, thus I may or may not have brakes when the truck tells me that the trailer is disconnected. Even when the truck recognized the trailer, I too have trouble getting the brakes to lock up using the adjuster. I just set the level at 7 until I get this solved. I haven't talked to Ford yet and, need to Google the issue. You might want to do the same before you act. This happens with many brands of trailers. Also, a few GM trucks using the same system are affected. Let me know if you learn more and, I will do the same.
We use our F350 to pull two different horse trailers, and my equipment trailer. The equipment trailer is nearly new. It never faults out, but one of the horse trailers was giving the 'trailer disconnected' error on the dash display pretty regularly. Turned out to be a poor ground in the trailer wiring. A friend who works on these things all the time told me the Ford controller is very picky that all the electrical connections and equipment on the trailer need to be tip top perfect....or it can error out. So that was apparently why it always worked perfect on my new trailer, but not on the older trailer.
