NY and inspection and registration question

I live in NY... i have had my TT for two years now...each year i register it(almost $100.00) and i have it inspected for another fee. I am a seasonal camper and only tow my camper twice per year(april to my campground and october to my house). Does anyone know if NY offers a temp registration or temp inspection? I dont mind paying for the inspection to make sure its safe, but i hate paying that registration fee when i only have it on the road twice per season for around 100 miles total....any ideas? thank you.
  • I am in the PRMd ( the peoples republic of Maryland ) or the tax me state . I have a buddy that has 4 trailers , 1 boat , 1 car , 1 utility , and 1 RV and has 1 tag . For the smallest trailer . He has been running like this for 15 years . It isnt right , but he hasnt been caught yet .

I use Len-Rich RV service in Gardiner to inspect my TT. Campers are their business. I just call them up and make an appointment for the inspection. They also offer mobile service, but I have not used their mobile service for an inspection though.

I have a few friends that have used Len-Rich. One friend had a Jayco 5th wheel that was rear-ended. When Len-Rich was done with the repair, it was better than new.

They are a first class operation.
  • Just out of curiosity. My liability insurance transfers to the towable with my current insurance when hooked up on a public roadway. But if you were in an accident and the trailer is not legally registered would you still be covered?

I am not debating the ethics just if one is opening up themselves up to additional risk they did not intend.

Rich has always been a gentleman to deal with. Since we bought our 1st TT we have been using his shop. I have even had him work on my TV.

I asked this Q to a insurance agent friend of mine. He basically said don't count on it. Also, many people think once the trailer is attached to the TV, there covered. His advice, make sure before you find out the hard way.
My trailers are not covered when hooked up to my TV under the policy I have. I had to add a rider policy to cover them. My TT is the only trailer I own that I have a separate ploicy for. My equipment and landscape trailers are on that rider ploicy.
  • It cost me $97 for the year, i wait until May to register it for somewhere around $50. My uncle use to tow his a couple times a year, he would borrow a plat for the day from friends or family.
