Oil leak or soot

I was out doing some errands today and while on the expressway I came up on a smoking Ram (smoking from under the truck not the tailpipe). It was a dually jacked up with a garbage can size exhaust outlet so clearly he screwed something up. But this is what was weird, it was a white truck but was completely covered by what looked like oil or it may have been soot from the front doors all the way to the tailgate. And when I say covered I mean it looked like it was sprayed with undercoating. The only white left on the truck was the front fenders and roof. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

Let me guess, he had his tow mirrors flipped out as well...

Had to laugh about the tow mirror thing :B Yes don't quite understand the tow mirrors on these Rams, they are bad enough as they are, flipped out they only get worse. I do flip them out to tow the 5ver, but they sure sure don't stay that way unhooked. One thing for sure I didn't buy my new Ram for the mirrors. The one thing they could do is copy the Ford mirrors, hands down better mirrors, and have had both . Can't have everything I guess
  • X2 on lack of DPF. They probably stuck a dummy DPF module at the end of the connector so he can still drive. But it will still try to regen sometime, which dumps lots of fuel to burn the non-existent DPF.
  • I am pretty sure this truck was sans any dpf. I really wish I took a pic.

I seen a RAM last month at a light next to me that we emitting white smoke underneath the cab... I'm sure it was in regen but the smoke coming from below the cab got my attention.

I also see from time to time 6.4 PSD Super Duty's pouring out white smoke from the tail pipe. Again probably from regen or EGR cooler leak.

white smoke typically is bad injector(s). Black soot is from low boost over fueling.

  • It did have an oil smell when I was behind him. But I have never seen such heavy residue. There was zero white showing trough the black. He clearly had no pride in the maintenance of his vehicle much less washing it.
  • Black mess in front of the garbage can, oil leak. Everything from there back covered in crud, soot. Maybe a valve cover gasket or turbo oil return line. both leak on very hot things..
  • Young boy. Probably has the fuel jacked up to make it smoke like heck along with a half a-- garbage can install with leakage? So, yes soot

We were all young at one time.
