Oil Question

A whining pump when the oil is cold is perfectly normal and, although it sounds bad, doesn't hurt a thing. I'd rather let it warm up a bit on a cold day then try an un-tested oil for the application. Yeah, 90-weight oil is like molasses on a sub-freezing day, but it works.

talked to a guy at napa that has worked there for years
he said, he was familiar with trucks and other vehicles that use GL-1 90 weight mineral oil

his advice was to keep using what was factory spec and has kept the tractor running for 56 years.

He said, he had seen it so many times over the years, someone changes the type or weight oil in one of these older vehicles and then the motor blows or other related problems start happening.

of course he had plenty of GL-1 oil on the shelf at $16 per gallon, I only need 8 gals, so I should be good to go.

talk to some oil co reps and see if they have a modern equivilent.

If not the min oil was used in heavy truck diff & trans for many years of hard work.

I know you said you have been around town talking to the oil boys but have you spoken to a bulk fuel/oil supplier? Industry still uses a lot of the type of oil you need and should be able to supply it for you.

Additionally, it looks like Home Depot carry's it for lawnmowers. You might want to check out a lawnmower repair shop to see if they can order it for you!!

but, no luck so far, no 10w30 non-detergent or low detergent oil to be found

as I understand it:
The old ferguson system is a bit different from other tractors as the same oil is used in the hyd lift system, transmission and differential.
why they did this I do not know, but it's worked for many years.

why change from GL-1 90 weight mineral oil: in cold weather its hard on the hyd pump until the oil warms up, tractor guys say the 10w30 oil will pump faster and still protect the system.

just find some without detergent or low detergent as detergent oil keeps the dirt suspended in the oil, so as the oil passes through the oil filter, it will be taken out.

however, this is where the cheese becomes more binding, as this Ferguson system does not have a filter, it was designed to let the dirt settle to the bottom of the sump and be taken out when you change the oil.

so, you do not want this dirt laden oil passing through the oil pump and hyd valves over and over, as it will wear it out.

just reading and thinking here, dangerous for me!!!!

I may just get the sump oil hot, then drain it out and add back GL-1 oil, maybe I can add a bit of zinc additive to help take care of the wear.

and just not worry about it for another 5 years or so.

as others have said, it's worked fine for the last 56 years.

Don't dump engine oil in a gear case. You're just asking for trouble. Get some 75/90 and dump it in and call it a day.

It usually costs people $$$$$ when they overthink.

I've wondered if the "high mileage" oils aren't in your spec range. High mileage vehicles wouldn't benefit from the cleaning properties in the oil.
