Oil Question

Normally an oil question gets lots of input.

I have a need for a multi viscosity oil, like a 10w30
but, low detergent or non-detergent.

so far, after much research, I have not been able to determine from the markings on a bottle of oil, which marking indicates the level of detergent in that brand of oil.

does anyone know if you can determine from the container the amount of detergent in a bottle of oil?

if so, please advise,

I need a low detergent or non-detergent multi viscosity oil for a machine.

Thanks,
Fred

I did find one at Home depot designed for their small engines - lawn mowers at $4.50 per qt.

But, I need 8 gals, so I was looking for a better deal. At today's oil prices that may be as good as it gets.
  • I'm not a tribologist, but I wouldn't expect you to need or want a 10w30 oil for that. If you want to "upgrade" I suggest a 75W90 or 75W140 gear oil from the local auto parts store or Tractor Supply. Buy synthetic if you really want to go all out.

One question though, does it have wet brakes? If it does, I'd stay as close as I could to the original spec.
  • Lot of change for sure but your need need has not. OEM specs worked for 50 years . :)
  • This oil is what I found in a (as advertised Non-detergent oil)

I want to replace the oil in my old tractor trans/differential, 1957 TO-35 Ferguson, it came with 90 weight mineral oil.
but a lot has happen to oil in the last 50 years so I am up for a improvement.

Powermate 4-Cycle Engine Oil - 10W30-PA0650074 at The Home ...

The Non-Detergent 4-Cycle Engine Oil 10W30 6 Qt. Bottles Per Case is
manufactured mainly for high RPM engines. It protects and extends the life of an
    engine.
  • What's the oil specification you need? Is it an ISO oil?
  • Check with http://www.schaefferoil.com/oil-lubrications-products.html

Tractor Supply... imho.. best place for oil like you are describing. Can get them in 5 gallon buckets IIRC.

2x I have seen it in 30 weight in Murray store for $10 gallon in 5 gallon pail. Never seen multi grade non detergent motor oil.

    UTF a possible option?

  • What kind of a machine?

Does it have to be engine oil?

There are all sorts of oils on the market. I would talk to an oil manufacture and talk to someone that will find one that fits your needs.
