Oil usage in Ford 6.8 V10

The early Tritons used 5W30. they switched to 5W20 for fuel mileage savings. noting else changed other than the Oil Cap.

Thanks for the feedback. I have always used 5w-20 will try the 5W30. It will make it between oil changes before needing to add any but I am anal and will add some to keep it midrange on the dip stick.

How many miles does it take to use a qt? there is a full qt between add and full. Will it make it to an oil change without dropping to add?

My 6.8L has 75,000 and doesn't use a drop between oil changes. A 1/2 qt does not seem excessive. It may be time to consider a little heavier oil if it increases.

Sounds like a high mileage oil would be the ticket.

I was using .5 quart when I was running the 5W20. Running 5W30 eliminated that usage. I now use no oil!.......well maybe a couple drops.LOL

.5 qt at 3k miles is within normal usage. I'm assuming your using 5W20 weight oil? If so you could go to a 5W30 weight and see if it drops.

Check the PCV valve or just replace it if it hasn't been done for awhile. It should rattle pretty freely when you shake it.

But, 1/2 qt in 3k miles isn't/shouldn't be a concern anyway.. I had a 5.4 Triton and that's about what it used. More when towing a lot. 255,000 miles on it and was still running strong when I traded it.

1 qt every 1000 miles is time to start looking for mechanical issues.
