Lower viscosity = higher flow,= more removal of heat by oil. Subject to owner not flogging to unneccessary levels of abuse such that heat removal does not exceed barrier breakdown of oil film between moving parts, due to load limits being exceeded.
Make mine Mobil 1 Turbo diesel truck 5w-40, and if hauling heavy loads at high speeds, I spend the money and buy Mobil 1 Delvac-1 in 5w-40, it is a more durable product, the oil base stock is PAO based in Delvac-1. You are dealing with a $16,000 motor, or more, chintzing on oil, to me seems pennywise, and pounds foolish. Run Industrial strength commercial grade motor oil if towing fast, heavy and hard.
