Journal bearing clearances are designed for 'that' engine. Meaning the torque
listed in the specification, the RPM range the computer is told to limit to,
the ambient temp range specified, and for this discussion...the oil characteristics
The ambient temp range vs viscosity is spelled out in the manual.
Going to a tuner has the potential to exceed the journal bearing's oil flow (GPH/PSI)
to allow metal to metal contact
Won't instantly blow up the engine, but it will wear out sooner
Ditto the rest of the stuff oiled via the galleries
I am of the opinion that only a clueless idiot would chip or tune their turbo diesel towing vehicle. Or they are dishonest and have low moral values, or legal values.
Those days are gone, I hope. I also hope Bosch, Ford, RAM and GM Chevy nails them all when they do throw a TD-1 warranty void code for a chip or tune.
