10W30 is the most commonly used grade for the fleets of big rigs on the road so no reason to fix what is not broken. A 5W anything is good only is the ambient air temperatures fall below zero degrees. They are not as good in temperatures over 90 degrees.
Multigrade oil does not protect as well as a single grade oil but it is more convenient when the air temperatures vary widely and to improve fuel economy, so a trade-off is made. The greater the viscosity range of the oil the less likely it is going to protect properly throughout the range and this is even more important with a diesel engine.
For towing it is better to use a dino oil and change it more often and not try to do an extended service interval by using a synthetic. With an oil change you remove all the soot that builds up in the old motor oil and you get a fresh batch of additives in the new oil.
