Well the air bags are being rationed to each manufacture as there are millions that need to be recalled. The question is why hasn't the NHTSA and the US AJ gone after Takata like they did with VW, Toyota, GM and FCA?
I wondered the exact same thing. VW cheated on emissions testing. Bad? Yes. Will it injure or kill you? No.
Takata skimped and/or screwed up on air bag construction. Bad? Yes. Will it injure or kill you? Quite possibly. And if the bag goes off while your driving you might take others with you.
So let's get this straight....
#1 If a company skirts the rules and regulations of the precious EPA, the US government will use every measure of the law to pin them to a wall, fine them, and make them a villain.
#2 If a company makes a faulty component that is used in millions of vehicles across several makes and models...and the component is a mandated safety device....and said device is considered a valuable life saving feature....but the faulty device can kill or maim you......Ah, okay, we'll give you as much time as you need to supply corrected devices. Oh, wait a minute, we'll also allow the vehicles with faulty devices to stay on the road and hope there are no more injuries.
There is a some great government logic there!!!!
