I used to be in a volunteer fire dept. years ago. Put out hundreds of car/truck fires.
The old volkswagons had valve covers and oil pans made of magnesium.
We still put them out with water.
The fire depts. will all be trained n fighting aluminum vehicle fires, as there will probably be a lot more vehicles made of it in the future.
What do we all think about riding in an airplane, or a Lambo? They have magnesium bodies, not aluminum, primarily magnesium, and burn great.
The fire depts. are probably more worried about the electric cars that are out there. They have to look up the specific model and year to find out where the high voltage cables run through the body, after a wreck, to avoid getting electrocuted, while extricating the occupants.
They know their jobs and will be well trained at it.
Sorry rjstractor I didn't see your post till I replied.
Used to build VW air cooled engines and actually, only the engine case is magnesium. It used to be a popular deal to take them out in the middle of the desert and light them on fire. Makes quite a spectacle. As noted above, mag can be extinguished with water if the proper method is used.
