Have you lived on that slim amount of money for a couple?

I knew someone who had a trustee managing their (slim) funds. He could get shoes every 2 years. The trustee was paid out of those slim funds, too.

Not much fat.

The fat is about $1600 for the couple today.
Not bad free money $19200 per year. Free health care, food stamps, normally free rent and utilities and many other benefits. Who would call that zero. Not bad when the minimum wage is $26520 in Oregon. So you can work for minimum wage or get more by living off the fat.

Define homeless? Full timers are technically and legally homeless. I don't consider myself as mentally ill or a drug addict, and I don't have a permanent B&M homestead I call home.

Are you that naive to A. Believe this would work. And B. Believe that the majority wouldn’t fall into the junkie category and get the boot back out to the same street that they moved in from?

On the bright side, if you come to Portland there is no need to stay in an RV park just park on any street you won't be ticketed. Also several of these house-less RV dwellers just dump down the sewer grate or sometimes just in the street when their tanks are full.

Never give to a panhandler. It only encourages more of the same. Every city has a way to help those in need whether it be churches or other non-profits.
In the article they picture a woman holding a dog and state that she and her husband are living on their combined Social Security payments of $1100. This is SSI not Social Security which means neither worked enough to become insured for Social Security disability which is half of time after age 21 before becoming disabled.

Salt Lake City is bad as well. They are all over the city. Some dump their tanks right at the curb or a storm sewer. This is a life choice for some of these people. They do not want the responsibility of a "home" and live a nomadic life. Not necessarily mental illness or drug abuse but a choice of lifestyle. They panhandle for their money. Not uncommon for these people to die with thousands of dollars in cash in their pockets.
