Opinions on 100W Solar System

I've done my reading and research and think I have a system figured out.

Limited space on the roof of my 815 so plan on going with a single panel. Maximum space available is 52 x 25, but optimum would be 52 x 22 to avoid possible shadows from the ac shroud by about 3pm.

Only have one Group 29 and don't really plan on adding another. This one currently does fine for a couple of days if I'm careful during the winter. So don't need a lot more capacity.

Biggest factor is the new truck isn't keeping up with the frig on DC while driving despite having the same wiring as on the previous truck. Second big factor is I'm tired of having to pull the battery when the camper sits in the yard for a couple of months or I forget and leave an LED on.

Have been looking mainly at the AM Solar website and if ordered from them I would get the GS100 Panel($269) with the SunSaver-10 PWM Controller ($55).

Thoughts and suggestions?

  • I thought about adding solar and then I tried to figure out when I'd actually need it.

Thoughts and suggestions, do add a second battery. Put a battery cutoff in and use it. Add a different source for heat other than your furnace. Change to LED lights and do add your second battery. Assuming you have a propane option on your fridge, use propane mode instead of DC mode.
  • Just for a different point of view, several people on here have used this stuff.
I have 2 of these panels, but I use a Bogart Engineering solar controller which works hand in hand with my TM-230-RV meter.
  • Yeah, I'm working on the truck charging issue. I have #2 run the length of the truck so wire size isn't the issue, but could be the connector at the rear bumper or the relay feed in the engine compartment.

Been wanting to add solar still so I don't have to watch the consumption as tight. Next year we hope to travel out west and while still plan on moving every day or so, the travel time may not be enough to keep the battery recharged, even if I do fix the wiring.

Let's not mention that since my kids are supporting themselves, I have some money burning in my pocket so have some for toys, ummm, mean upgrades.
  • I assume your truck engine is supposed to charge your camper battery? If so, I'd say you have a problem with that charging system.
Your research for solar on you limited space is good. AM Solar is a top notch company to deal with. Still, I think you should try to find out why your truck's alternator is not charging your battery while traveling.
  • Your description for why you'd like to add this seems to center around what a trickle charger would do. As for the frig, there seems to be a problem with the charging and solar is the band aid?
