Opinions on Brand Quality

Hello all,

I've recently sold our first travel trailer, a 2001 Shasta Phoenix 268. We owned the Shasta for about four summers and really loved it, just looking for something slightly larger. Being my first TT, I don't have a lot to compare the Shasta to, but I was overall quite happy with the quality. I've heard a lot of complaints about other TT's and have noticed what I consider extremely shoddy workmanship in other brands. What are some high quality, mid-range TT's I should consider? I know most, if not all the components and appliances will be similar or the same, I just don't want to buy a TT and be disappointed in the quality compared to what I'm used to in the Shasta.

I'm looking for a pre-owned bunkhouse style trailer...no older than 2006, 26-30' in length with at least two bunks, a large living room slide and a private master bedroom. I tend to favor Jayco's as I've heard mostly good things about their brand. I tend to lean towards stick and tin built trailers as it's what I'm familiar with and I've heard so many nightmare stories about fiberglass delamination. I do like some of the Jayco Eagles though, which are fiberglass. Aside from the weight, what are the benefits of fiberglass? I really like the Eagle 284BHS as well as the Jayflight 30BHS. Also, I've been looking at a Forest River Wildwood LE 26TBSS...I really like the floorplan, but don't know much about Wildwood. How would you rate the Wildwood quality compared to the Jayflight? How about Jayflight compared to Eagle?

What other brands should I be looking for? I know Arctic Fox has a great reputation, but there are few to none for sale in MI. I've also been keeping an eye out for Nash and Sunline...both of which are also few and far between around these parts. I've heard Lance makes a nice TT, but also haven't seen many around. Any other brands that are quality and common around the midwest?

  • Thanks everyone. Is anyone familiar with Dutchmen TT's? I'm looking at a 2009 26B-DSL. It's quite a drive from me, so I'd like to find out as much as possible before making the drive. According to the seller's description, it's in extremely good condition and from what I can tell, it's priced very well. Any thoughts on this particular unit, or Dutchmen in general?
  • Even Rolls Royce automobiles have warranties for a reason... ;)

You get what you get when you walk thru your rig the first time.. Sure, you can't see everything, but in general, if you inspect it to even a little degree and it's not leaking or falling apart, you should be okay and yes, you do need to do regular maintenance on the thing too...

    Good luck!

  • I'm finding as a new RV owner but an experienced boat owner, that a lot of the same rules apply: when shopping used, it's all about condition and little to do with brand.

That being said, my Keystone Cougar appears to be well made and with good care by the PO's, has held up very well since '04. I looked at a similar R-Vision Trail-Lite that although also in great shape, appears to be a much lower-end camper.
  • I've been happy with the workmanship on my KZ. They have many stlyes so finding a used one shouldn't be that difficult.

With respect to fiberglass vrs tin, you will get a lot of opinions on what people prefer and why. Generally, tin dents easy but doesn't delaminate, is lighter, easier to repair and less expensive.

    Good luck with your search.
  • Here's my two cents....

Our 23 ft TT and our current 38ft 5th wheel were both considered mid level quality. We didn't know that when we bought them. We based our decision on price, floorplan, features and look. Both had cabinets that were made from luan panels with solid wood doors and drawer fronts. The luan had a vinyl Wood Look coating. The overall appearance gave the look of solid woood cabinets. This provided a high end look for each of the interiors if you didn't do a close inspection.

As it turned out both trailers gave us long service with no more than "what you would expect" problems. We sold the TT after 16 years and our 5th wheel is still going strong at 19 years. Both were used at least once per month for weekend trips and one or two long trips each year.

So my advice is to look for something you like, that fits your needs and if the online testimonials don't show any major issues...buy it.
