If the 09 GM DPF system was so great why did they change to DEF? Was it to just join the crowd? Was it to improve MPG's or did GM feel DEF was a better method.
MPG rating in the DPF era were very close to the ratings of gas powered trucks.
I'm not suggesting that DPF trucks are bad. If I owned one I'm sure I'd be very satisfied. Nevertheless if purchasing today, 6 years later I would take advantage of hindsight and by a DEF era truck. The added bonus of the DEF trucks is the drastically improved payload ratings. I see it as a no brainer.
How in the world does DEF improve payload???
GM and Ford were first to introduce DEF in 2011. It was needed to meet stricter emissions requirements.
Trucks made in the DEF era have increased payloads not due to the emissions system but due to beefier frames. In short the 2011 and newer trucks are improved over the prior model, which is why I recommended buying a 2011 era vs. the 2009 era
