While I have no data other than my own experience, I suspect one of the biggest causes of TT tire failures (ST or LT) is that with a trailer you have NO way to know a tire is loosing pressure from a nail or other slow leak unless you have a TPMS. So...... along you go and then BAMM!!! Darn tires, blowouts, but the real cause was underinflation from a slow leak.
Couple that with to many folks bumping curbs with TT tires potentially damaging the belts. I've seen that way go many times with people going into/outof gas stations, parking lots and really hammer a curb with the tires. Not a good overall situation.
On a car/truck you can very often tell a tire is getting low.
I had two nail punctures I was luckly to catch before a blowout. Then I went to a TPMS. no issues since but at least I'll know I picked up a nail.
Personally I don't think the "drive from the factory" really has a significant impact on tire life.
My neighbor and I have around 1/4 million miles (yes, 250K+) towing trailers with ST tires. He wins with over 200K, I'm at about 50K. Results so far, I've had two nail flats I caught. He has had two low tires from nails as well, but caught before the tire blew out.
How many folks don't pay attention to tires and could have ended up with 4 blowouts from nails and not know the REAL root cause was a nail and inattention to tire pressure?? But then they blame the "ST junk" tires.
And while I know folks on this board have had catastrophic ST tire failures, and they certainly do occur, personally I don't know of any of the many many folks we camp with that have had a catastrophic ST tire failure. A very few have had a nail etc. flat, but no blowouts.
I've considered going to go to LT tires given the miles we travel each year, but there really are very very limited options in 15" for a substitute for a 225/75-15 LRE ST tire. pretty much limited to LRC in LT's in that size and that is not enough capacity for me.
Now if you start with 16", another story. similar price and you can get some very good LT tires in a suitable load range.
