I agree LT tires are a better choice in most cases but quality ST tires have their place as well. Overloading and improper inflation are the major culprits for catastrophic ST tire failure although some brands are just poorly manufactured.
I gave ST tires every opportunity. I did several upgrades including new rims as I increased size and load rating until I had maxed out what was possible with ST tires. It didn't work.
As far as quality... Testing requirements are the big problem. ST requirements are laughable compared to LTs.
Presently, Maxxis appears to be building to a higher standard.... They are to commended for as there is NOTHING forcing them to do it.
Unfortunantly, their market share and distribution is woefully inadequate. Perhaps price competiveness pressures are limiting their growth.
And that is the other big problem... Most are unwilling to PAY for a better tire.. At some point Maxxis may bow to the competitive pressures and start cost cutting. It won't be published anywhere, but the tires will just get worse.
These board room decisions are made all the time.
Profit is the main objective of all corporations.
If building a better but more expensive tire is less profitable than a cheaper tire.... Guess what happens.
