Thanks for the heads up there... Our Outfitter is from 2011 and we have so far spent around 150 nights in it - with roughly the same number of roof operations. I dread the day when the lift motor quits...
A few questions to those who have already experienced a failure:
- how long did the motors last?
- what is it that usually fails first? The motor itself or the gearing? Our roof has no additional loads on top, we are running (sort of) light.
- what was the "operator error", so I could pay special attention to avoid doing the same thing?
- is the motor identical to the ones that are used on the electric jacks? In that case at least I would always have 4 spares with me.
Repair looks and sounds to be straightforward with the right tools, at the right place. Stranded on a remote camping lot not so much...
Thanks a lot,
Joerg
Joerg, seems like the motors I have may be from a bad batch. I do have A/C and 2 solar panels up top, but that doesn't seem like it would be enough weight for this type of wear/tear to occur. That and I've actually had 2 of the jack motors replaced already, and this roof one gets a lot more use than those did. I read somewhere else on these forums that there was an issue with Happijac in the 2010/2011 years... Just make sure you have the manual option available, and you'll be fine. The electric remote sure is nice, but it takes less than 5-10 min to crank it up/down by hand, so it's not a trip killer issue.
Thanks to all that commented. Still not sure whether I'll try it myself, but will let everyone know how it all comes together. Meantime, my teenager is getting very familiar with the manual option here.
