Is what you have on the outside possibly a control for exterior speakers and not a "stereo" in the sense that it has a radio, a disc player, or a tuning selector?
Can you describe it better? Is there a brand name on it?
If you just want the light off, I'm pretty sure you can unmount it from the exterior and remove the connections to it.
