Interesting viewpoint - we much prefer a cabinet with doors that keeps the contents out of view and I don't ever recall climbing on the bed to retrieve anything we keep up there. I also don't ever recall anything shifting about, clothing just sits there stacked until until we need something, but with an open shelf I can see how items might get tossed about. ;)
The boxes fit across the shelf with less than 1/2” between each one. Nothing has ever been tossed about. On our previous camper, that center section with no door was a pain. Fortunately, we don’t need to keep any clothing up there as there is adequate built in storage under the bed and is very easy to get to.
