Paint recommendation

Looking for some advice on paint my rig. 1971 Aladdin Car-Pet with aluminum siding. What type of paint should I use when I repaint it and do I need primer. Photos are under my post 1971 Aladdin
  • Thanks guys. The paint on it is original and no bare metal is showing. I was not sure if I could scuff it up and paint over it with a latex. I will follow your tips come springtime
  • Prep on my aluminum siding was done with Jasco Prepaint conditioner and a scuff pad. I used Sherwin Williams Industrial DTM primer and topcoated with Sherwin Williams Semigloss Latex Superpaint. Accent colors were applied with rattle cans. The paint job is holding up well.

Joe, My son works in an auto body shop and has general knowledge of paint issues, but is not an expert. Here is what he said:
You will need to either first apply a "direct to metal" sealer or primer. Something that chemically etches to the aluminum. After this, you can paint it with any automotive paint you want. If you are going to do any "body work" first, you will need to use primer and then sand it before painting. If no body work, sealer or primer is fine and no sanding required. In either case, you must do the sealer or primer before painting. Hope this helps. If you know someone who paints cars, their advice would be invaluable.

    What he said.

Aluminum requires more attention to the prep than steel does. You need to get rid of any oxidation and then use a zinc chromate primer. Once you have the aluminum primed your good to go.
