I have not used the parking brake much since I traded my last stick shift truck in 2004 when I bought my first automatic truck. Even when driving stick the parking brake was used mostly for smoother starting from a stop on a steep hill.
I burned up the one on my Ranger pick-up when it did not fully release on a bitter winter's day. It finally released when it got hot enough. I never would have noticed it had I not smelled it when I stopped for gas.
Once I got the automatic transmissions I rarely need the parking brake. I know the automatic transmission parking function can fail but I could be walking down the street and have an eagle drop and anvil on my head also.
I has been a long time since I have used hand signals to signal a turn, they taught us that in school, even when turn signal lights were standard on cars. That all disappeared when air conditioning became common and nobody drives with their window down.
There is nothing wrong with setting the parking brake. Kind of like having a belt and suspenders.
Safe travels
