Payload, is there a right answer?

Well, I've learned a lot of stuff here, and I would like to thank you all for lots of valuable input and discussions.

I want to make sure I get this right, assuming there is a right answer.

Truck is a 2016 F250 CC SB XLT with camper package overloads.

I even took it to a scale. Full tank, with just me in it, and the Torqlift camper tiedowns installed. Stableloads are going on tomorrow.

Tires are E rated tires at 3640 lbs each. (18" wheels)

Truck is registered for 12,000 lbs (only other option was 8k lbs, which was too low).
Here's the data.
Sticker
Scaled weight
If I go by the GVWR, payload is only 2460 lbs.
If I go by adding up axle weights, payload is 2840.
If I just add up the rear tire ratings, and subtract scaled weight, payload is 4020 lbs.

If I used the licensed weight, subtracting scaled weight, payload is 4460 lbs.

Calculations here
So which is legal, and which is safe, and what would you do?

I'm aiming for a used 2200-2500 lbs camper (no slide, like a Lance 845 or 825), but a slide (Lance 861, or 821) would be nice to have...and that's 3000 lbs...

Opinions?
  • I believe the payload ratings of these new trucks are set by corporate attorneys - not the engineers that designed and built the trucks.

My truck is "over-loaded" and it doesn't seem to bother the truck what so ever.

There should be a sticker in your glove box that will give you an idea of how much they recommend the max weight for a camper for your truck. Its a good place to start.

Mine says 2935 lbs. My camper weighs 3760 lbs. No problem.
  • Mitch,
Your F150 certainly can tow almost anything. Just ask the thousands upon thousands of 1-series owners who regularly tow big trailers. The stretch in the load capacity and tow capacity of one and two series trucks has widened in recent years, especially with gas engines and 2WD. It's the carrying that's the problem: putting that 3500 pounds directly over the rear axle. Your 7700 pound GVWR is almost as high as my old Dodge 2500's, 8800 pounds (or 9450 with the camper package single secondary spring). If it works for you, go for it.

  • My payload won't load either... Because I have a 15 series truck, I can't tow anything according to most folks on here.. ha, ha!

  • What happened to this site? When I joined there weren't all these bs advertising...
  • If you are using rv.net site and trying to post any text or url having symbol of percent - DON'T.
The owners can't afford to hire software programmer who would be able to fix the glitch.
