I made mine out of 2 pieces of plastic rain gutter from Home Depot.
I cut off part of the edge on one piece so it would slide inside the other to adjust for my length and it just slips right over the awning roller. It fits snug but a high wind has blown mine off on occasion.
I wouldnt recommend towing with it on, or I really dont see any reason to. I just put it on while parked at home. I think it cost about $12.
I did the same thing. Works great, just remember to take it off before traveling. Yes, I drove 5 miles mine on. Good cheap in investment.
