- OasisbobExplorerDO NOT FORGET the trailer battery also activates the emergency trailer brakes in case of an uncoupling. To pull this trailer knowing the battery is not functional is to put yourself and others at risk. Some converters will try hard to charge a battery that is toast. Be sure it does not boil it dry. Better yet replace it and be safe.
- Mr_BeeboExplorerIf you are backyard/driveway camping and you do not have a battery around, yes, you can usually plug into a house outlet (15a or more) or plug into your genie. Traveling on the road, as mentioned, is another story.
- KD4UPLExplorerYou're battery is shot so buy a new one. What does a group 24 deep cycle cost? $75? Big deal. That's cheaper than risking your converter being one that needs the battery connected.
Then, of course, there is the illegal to tow without a battery thing. - RoyBExplorer IIIN addition to being against the local DOT law and not being safe, your trailer insurance may not cover any loses as well associated with a run-away trailer and electric brakes not in working order.
There is always something huh... - Mark_HeislerExplorer IIbest thing to do is go and buy the cheap and small rv battery
then you will be covered
if your all way plugged in at least you have some power if the power goes out and 12 v to run your fridge and light will traveling
Wall-mart has cheap rv battery for about 50 buck or less - bikendanExploreryou're right!:S
it's against the law to transport a trailer equipped with electric brakes, without a battery.
the trailer battery is needed to energize the trailer's brakes in case the trailer disconnects from the tow vehicle while in motion, when the breakaway cable is pulled out. - Old-BiscuitExplorer IIITrailer have brakes????
Trailer needs a good charged battery to provide power to energize brakes if trailer should disconnect from tow vehicle.
That is the main reason for the battery.......secondary is providing DC power for trailer equipment when not connected to shore power.
Having a good battery provides a load bank for converter even those converters that can operate w/o battery in place.
Go buy a new battery.....mark cables before removing so that you don't install backwards (reverse polarity) and be SAFE. - bikendanExplorersome older trailers have converters that require that the battery be connected.
you need to research your converter and see whether it does or not. - Fire_InstructorExplorerJust make sure that the clamps for the battery are isolated from each other, so that they don't arc together......
- PapPappyExplorerYour converter is there to convert 110VAC to 12VDC for your lights, etc. The battery is just there to take the load, if you don't have the 110VAC for the converter.
If in doubt, can you plug in at home, and see how it works? If your lights work at home, they'll work at the CG:)
