Plugging a tire..

Scenario: You're out on the road, pulling the travel trailer and discover a screw in your rear tire. What do you do.

I pulled the screw and stuck a plug in it. So far so good. But, not sure it's a great idea to do a lot of towing on that..

Thoughts?
  • I plug it and forget it. I've never had one leak. They are sticky out of the package, but I always add some rubber cement to them before plugging.
  • A plug is a temporary fix to get you to a tire shop where they can pull the tire and repair it properly from the inside.

Personally if I see a screw in a tire I just leave it unless the air loss is dramatic. Figure if it's still holding air, there's no point in removing it for a plug. Either way, next stop is a tire shop
  • Plug is fine for a temporary fix. I'd get it repaired properly at the earliest opportunity.

  • I have plugged many tires on the road as a temporary fix. I always get them properly repaired asap. Back in the day (when I was a college student and broke) I would continue to drive on the plug. They always failed eventually.
  • Not about to continue driving knowing I have a screw etc in tire

Change tire...put spare on and then drop by Discount Tire and have it properly repaired (from inside) for FREE
  • The plug will eventually evolve into a slow leak. Get it fixed properly when you get a chance.
