Pop-up campers in high winds?

So my girlfriend is trying to convince me to sell my 9.5' coachman and replace it with a 4WC Grandby, so that it can be stored in a garage making it easier to find a new house.

I'm on the fence about the idea in general, I don't really want to go to a smaller fridge and a cartridge toilet, but really I'm concerned about wind. Pretty much anywhere I camp there is going to be 40 to 70 mph winds all night, every night. Tents get destroyed, but the coachman camper just doesn't care.. park head into the wind and you don't even feel it.

...how would a pop-up camper handle that wind though?

  • You might survive the wind but the grizzly bears WILL eat you. Everybody knows grizzly's love popups (=human tacos);)
  • The noise! Then more noise! We camped in one in the FL-keys and had 3 days with high wind gusts 30-40 mph and it just about drove us batty! And of course there was allot of swaying.
  • I had a Coleman Popup for many years. It was a great camper, easy to tow behind our minivan, and comfortable inside. No shower/toilet inside though. We were camping in Idaho along a lake when canyon winds started up. They were maybe 30 mph winds with a few gusts to 40 maybe. The camper survived but I was very nervous with all the noise, air infiltration, and stretching of the fabric. The winds only lasted a few minutes then it got quiet. I guess I would not want to go through another situation with winds even stronger or longer than those we experienced.
