Pop up purchasing question.

Hi all. New to the forum and have been looking at used pop ups for the past few months. Every one I have looked at has a moldy smell to it and that has caused me to walk away from them all. I've come to the conclusion that this might just be an unavoidable situation.

I looked at one this morning that clearly has some mold on the canvas. The owner said he has scrubbed it and it is stained. He also said it's a common occurrence. Is that true? Does the smell go away after the trailer has been opened for a bit? Any advice on purchasing would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike
  • Thanks so far. Those Aliners are nice but too small for my needs. I need to be able to sleep 4 adults comfortably at the minimum.

Does the smell dissipate after the camper has been open for a few hours? I know there are some products that remove mold and the smell so there is that option. I also worry that the mold is caused by leaks.
  • If you can find a popup that uses Sunbrella instead of the old fashion canvas you will run a lesser chance of getting mold and mildew. Sunbrella is a breathable acrylic material. Coleman/Fleetwood used it with good success. Any camper will get mold and mildew if not maintained properly. They need to be put away dry, and if you can't put it away dry get it opened up ASAP to dry it out. DO NOT use water repellent on it.
  • If you do find a good used pop up spray KIWI Heavy Duty Water Repellent on the canvas it is a great product. Make sure to always have the canvas dry before storing.Good Luck in your search.
  • An interesting alternative. Thanks. Checking out their site now.
  • Look at this brand. No mold issues as there is no canvas.

PS: Yes they really do set up this type in 90 seconds! I wish they built a camper version! It would make a really lightweight truck camper with the ability to stand up inside.
