There are alternatives in solar and there are a number of components to sucess. The first is energy savings i.e. the use of LED lights, low consumption components, we use an Espar diesel heater and A Waeco 12V 120V ac refrigerator, computer case fans in place of a fantastic fan. The trailer also has a flat screen TC/DVD combo and XM radio receiver and stereo.
The use of a high voltage solar panel with an MPPT controller. We have a 185W 66 cell panel that puts out in excess of 50V and we harvest usable current from can see to can't see, dawn to dusk. It also works in a shaded camp site. We spent eight days on the north shore of Lake Superior and the camp site except for maybe one hour a day had some shade on the panel. We lost a little ground each day in but at the end of the eight days we were still at 63% state of charge. I do have a 140W flexible panel that can be set out in the sun on an extension cord, did not need it.
