I'd like to get a generator for camping off the grid.
Or am I missing something?
As you can see you'll see all sorts of varying recommendations, from those of us who favour premium priced Yamaha and Honda generators, both proven for long term durability, and alternate less costly recommendations from those who are convinced Blue & Red are overpriced. Nonetheless, one thing to keep in mind is where you're going to get parts & service, which eventually you will need. Here in Canada & the US getting either for a Honda or Yamaha is as easy as visiting your local motorcycle / powersport dealer who is supported by Honda USA, Honda Canada, Yamaha USA, Yamaha Canada. Buy Brand X at Home Depot, or Harbor Freight, or wherever and you're on your own as you sure won't be taking it back to a big box store or online retailer for either parts or service. You'll have to source parts (if available) and service from a local small engine repair shop and hope they can help you. Champion has made significant improvements in parts availability and service assistance but if you can't fix it yourself you're likely going to be back at that small engine repair shop for the actual fix. Pundits will try to convince you this just isn't a big deal but for some of us the convenience of knowing for a fact we can get any part and service for our genset, even when it's many years old, is reason enough to convince us the price of admission for a Honda or Yamaha genset is worth the price of admission. Your choice. ;)
