Take a middle ground:
- The $299 generator is likely an open frame contractors generator which will sound like a lawnmower when running.
- The Honda is overpriced.
The nice thing compared to 10yrs ago is you can find a 2500-3500w inverter generator from non-Honda manufacturers that will be 30-50% lower price and be almost as quiet and fuel efficient.
FYI - We have a 2007 Yamaha 2400. At the time it was really Honda or Yamaha but when it dies, we won't be buying name brand.
It very likely won't die, unless you kill it intentionally or get well over 1000 hours on it.
Nice part is they're so expensive (Honda and Yami) that they're quickly liquidated by people who don't use them often and need extra cash. So finding used ones is relatively easy.
BUT if people didn't buy cheap c rap, no one would produce it.
I learnt perty gud from my dad, growing up we didn't have a lot of money. Talking average blue collar jobs, small house, old used cars, no $ for extravagant things.....
BUT again, dad never bought junk. But once, cry once. Do without, but used, whatever you need to do, but don't douche your money away on (jap) c rap as he'd say.
Fast forward 30-40 years. I have 2 big mowers, an Exmark and a Ferris. Bought both old/used for somewhere around 1/4 th cost of new. Combined they are over 50 years old. Need a couple new spindles and an idler bearing on one this winter. Yet somehow a Home Depot Toro push mower lasts like 5 years tops, only doing the front yard......
