Portable Generators

Well along the south coast using the camper (Northstar Adventurer) is a run from one shorepower plug to the next, so I am shopping for a portable inverter generator. I know the Honda 2000 series are very popular, does anyone have experience with the new Briggs and Straton P2200 PowerSmart inverter generator? Seems to have good reviews and with a 200 watt buffer over the "usual" brands maybe it would be a good alternative? (Also $400 less expensive)

Thanks in advance

Jay

We don't have any luck at all using our 2KW Honda EU2000i unit to operate our 13,500 BTU Air Conditioner. I can turn off everything in the tailer and maybe get it to startup but as soon as it cycles it trips the breaker...

SO if you are planning on running the air conditioner then you will need something bigger than the 2000Watt generator...

I purchased my Honda EU2000i back in early 2008 and it has run flawlessly since then. I have mine secured to the tailgate corner of my covered truck bed and pull it out into the tail gate when I need to charge batteries on the traiter each morning. I can plug in my trailer using the RV30A-15 long dogbone adapter cable from WALMART for the required three hour generator run time...

Always starts right up on the first or second puyll of the rope...

Runs everything in my trailer except the Air Conditioner or high wattage Microwave unit...

  • I had two Yamaha EF2000 generators. One failed at ~1600 hours with an excessive engine oil leak. Back to the shop for 4 (!!) months for warranty repair. Still leaks. Second failed at ~1800 hrs with the same problem and currently in the shop for repair.

A Honda 2000 was purchased and is now in daily use. Both the Yamahas are going on Craigslist with problems duly noted. Good riddance!

When I asked the Yamaha service rep he said that he normally does not see such high hours on the units. Sorry! I bought a premium quality generator and paid the price because I intended to use it. I thought the excuse for the failure was POOR! I went as far as writing a registered letter to Yamaha Motorsports voicing my disappointment. It was received but never acknowledged.

    ADIOS YAMAHA!
  • Guys, thanks for the help and advice. I suspect the Honda or Yamaha is going to be on my shopping list for this summer. Camper isn't useful without A/C here!

  • Remember you get what you pay for. That's why I stay out of Dollar stores.
  • I haven't heard of anyone going wrong with a Honda or Yamaha. A relative has a Costco generator, and it seems ok. I haven't heard a Costco vs a Honda side by side to hear the difference.
  • Look at the Smarter Tools inverter/generator 2000. it's a Yamaha engine i have two that I run in parallel. They are similar to the Hondas. Been running mine hard for the last year with no complaints. I got them through Costco.
  • Get a Honda or a Yamaha quiet is very nice. I have a Yamaha 2400 and love it just bought a new arctic fox 990 with the built in onan and it's way to noisy. Spend the extra money you will be very glad.
  • No experience with the model you posted but Champion inverter generators have favorable reviews and offer significant savings over their Honda and Yamaha counterparts. Customer service has been reported as top notch and no issues with parts availability.
