They don't need hours and hours of data to diagnose sleep apnea. They only need 20 or so mins. of actual sleep time to monitor any apnic events.
Apnea is a legitimate health condition. Supposedly, according to most insurance policies, they have to conduct an assessment (sleep) study for any subsequent studies or equipment claims to be covered.
Sadly, you are right. It is by and large a scam business (as is much of the healthcare industry). The owner of the sleep center I went to literally talked like a used car salesman.
The sleep study revealed very little, but they still billed my insurance $6K (I now have very crappy insurance). I already had my PAP machine at that point yetthe interpreting sleep doctor recommended EXACTLY what I was already doing, same pressure settings and all. The sleep study did nothing for me.
While my symptoms have all greatly diminished, it has left me with conditions that need to be treated. That's what I'm currently dealing with.
Had I not been so stubborn and in denial and listened to my wife's complaints of snoring and not breathing, I wouldn't have had to exhaust most of my savings on doctors, tests and trips to the ER.
Sorry, guys. I know this isn't the place for this, but I thinks lots of people are in denial about apnea like I was and are unkowingly hurting themselves.
