as mentioned, i keep my pre-flight checklist along with other towing to-dos in a Google spreadsheet. Can be accessed anywhere, and is stored on the google cloud. so if your phone breaks or whatever, you don't lose the data you had in the notepad.
it can also be accessed on another persons phone (wife, kid, brother, whoever) if you're phone battery dies.
also, when on a longer trip, have that paper map handy, but also, plan ahead on your GPS device and download a map of the area you'll be in so you can use it offline. Your GPS will pretty much always have a signal (the G stands for Global, after all) but you won't always have internet access to "live download" the local area.
