I leave the fittings on and they do go in the bumper. Never had pin holes or any significant rust. I do remove the hose when I get home and give the bumper and hoses a rinse and a few days of drying before reassembly. I always garage my trailer when not in use and think that the rain causes most of the rust problems.
You are in the minority, most keep there's outside in the weather, hence the comments about rust/pinholes, etc.
Mine is mounted on top of rear bumper, works like a champ.
