Sometimes property owners want to control areas adjacent to their property even though they don't have rights. Recently my wife pulled the camper over in AZ to look at the sunset and a stream and someone started shooting at her to make her go away.
As always, try to do the right thing but remember some people are going to be unreasonable and there's not a lot you can do about it without getting sucked into their pettiness.
