My only experience with Stealth Camping was on a trip North from Long Beach California. My Wife and I were returning from a Solar Electric install on a Boat for testing by SEA Magazine. It was about midnight when we got on Highway 1 on the coast. We were very tired, so we looked for a camping spot with our cab high camper shell. We saw some signs for a State beach campground ahead. I told my Wife I was too tired to drive, so we headed to the Campground. When we arrived, there was a Lady with a bad attitude at the entrance shack. She said they were all full and to leave. She was pretty rude. So we turned around and found a turnout about an 1/8 mile down the road. Pulled over and shut off headlamps. We sat there trying to figure out what to do for about 5 minutes. Then we see this Ranger leaving the campground for the night in a State truck. Well, being a California Tax payer, I turned around and headed back towards the Campground. When we arrived, the Guard shack was closed and locked. No gates. We continued into the Campground and found at least 15 empty spots on the beach. We picked out one, pulled in, and then retired for the night. In the morning, we used the showers and cooked breakfast. When it was time to hit the road, we drove slowly towards the exit. A nice man was now in the entrance shack. As we approached, he said "Thanks for staying and have a nice trip home". No one even knew we were "Stealth" Camping.
