I have different experience about truck stops. Usually they have separate area for RV and cars.
When driving 40' motorhomes in the past, I used them a lot. The best security you can get on the road, convenience shop, big showers if you want to spend few bucks. The biggest issue in the past was truckers running the engines overnight. One time we come to the stop for 65F night.
I was looking forward into sleeping with open windows.
But couple of truckers could not sleep with no noise, so they run the engines overnight anyway.
Rest areas in CA? Look good as nights in CA are usually colder... till at 11 PM refrigerator trailer parks next to you.
Good part in last years CA made "no idling" law, what brings some perspective to the issue.
