Just an FYI - I just set the garden hose in the opening and turn it on. There is a smaller VENT line inside that same opening and if that is plugged then you won't get water to go IN as the air will be pushing it back out. Given the age of the trailer, you might want to check that vent line and make sure it isn't plugged up or you will always have burping issues when filling.
Ours is a 2010 and had to clean out the vent once already, now I usually give the VENT a shot of water as I'm filling the tank.. My theory is that if the air is trying to push stuff OUT then hitting it with the hose should push that same stuff IN and free it up to breathe.
I had a plugged up vent once too.
I can fill mine with a standard garden hose but, not at full flow.
