Propane Issue - need help!

Hi guys!
I am having a repeated issue with our propane tank / regulator.
First camping trip this year, we went to the coast. That was a few weeks ago. It was cold, we had electric hookup, and we used propane to heat extensively. After three days (on the morning of leaving), the heater suddenly does not work anymore, and the water heaters pilot light shuts off. So I am thinking the tank is empty. Going to the gas station to have it re-filled, I am told it was still about 2/3 full. Hmmmm .... Tried everything at home, everything works like a charm.
So this weekend, we go on a trip again. This time, dry camping, no hookups. After setting up camp (incl. lighting the water heater), wife reports that the fridge light blinks. Sure enough, the water heaters pilot is out, too. SO I look at the gas bottle. And I swear I hear a hissing sound coming from somewhere near the regulator. So I wiggle the hose from the gas tank to the regulator, and at least in my imagination, I can hear the hissing sound change. No smell of gas that I recall, though. So I take a wet rag and get the whole hose wet, incl. the connection to the regulator to see if I can spot any bubbles. Nothing. In the meantime, wife reports that the fridge is working again. I re-light the water heater - everything is fine.
From then on, everything worked for three nights, no problem. Tried to test the hose and connection again - with no sign of any leaks.

So ... question for you guys: what is going on? What else can I do? What would you do?
I want to avoid going somewhere with no problem to diagnose, spending a lot of money on nothing. But then also, this is the propane supply.

Any help is very much appreciated!

  • I have also had a hose go bad on me. According to the dealer, there is a built in safety device like a check valve that prevents gas flow in case of a broken propane line or regulator failure. He also said that over time, this safety device will gum up with stuff and the valve will stick closed or work intermittingly. The dealer replaced mine "Free of Charge" which surprised me and has kept me a customer over the years. Hose is relative cheap and I keep a spare on hand, never know when you might need one.
  • The first change I would make is to use a ceramic heater when I have electric. It also could be that you opened the valve to fast and the regulator thought it was a leak. Open it slowly.
  • I have never seen a hose with any type of flow protection built into it. The excessive flow prevention is in the tank itself, it was mandated as part of the OPD requirements years ago. I have had several regulators go bad over the years, I would start there.
  • I have had both the regulator as well as the hoses go bad, really simple to replace but be sure to get the right pipe dope. It requires gas line fitting dope. I understand that teflon tape is not recommended for gas line application.
  • Thanks, shooted! So you are saying replace the hose between tank and regulator, right, not the regulator itself? Just trying to make 100% sure.
Yes, that would sound reasonable, and fairly easy to do.
  • The hoses coming off the tanks have a built in safety device that will shut off propane supply to the regulator in case of an accident or other damage. I have had several fail in the manner you describe. Take yours to an rv dealer for matching and replacement as I believe these must be matched properly for flow rate.
