Hunting down a propane leak is a lot cheaper than replacing cooling unit
When you 'got knocked over' by the propane smell (which I still have a hard time understanding that you do NOT have a LP Detector)have you checked that a stove top burner knob wasn't knocked open???
That much propane (heavy odor) would be difficult to have come from fridge (outside burner etc) vs some source inside (Stove/oven)
Hope you find that problem easily
