Not required on non-commercial vehicles.
IF you have them and have an annual State equipment
inspection law requirement, they all must work in
order to pass inspection.
Apparently added "back in the day" to give
that Big Rig look and appeal. - wilber1ExplorerRoof clearance lights on 2500 and 3500 trucks are an option here, not required by law. My 3500 doesn't have them, nor would I want them.

What purpose do they serve?
I think its so at night oncoming and following traffic will know that the vehicle is wider (80" wide or more). My dually has DOT cab lights, fender marker lights and DOT lights on the tail gate. It is most likely illegal driving without the tail gate. All RV's have DOT marker lights on the rear too.
Thanks to GordonThree and mileshuff for asking these questions- I had the same.
I've owned this truck for 3 years now and had no idea what they were for! I learned a while back that they were "DOT"-required, but not why.
I'd be most non-truck drivers don't know why they're there. - I_m_Rick_JamesExplorer

I had a 2500 Suburban 4 trucks ago that had the roof lights. Don't ask me why somebody ordered that way, but they just looked stupid on a SUV.
Did it have "quadrasteer?"
I'm guessing yes. I don't believe they were even an option on a suburban. But when you ordered quadrasteer it automatically got them because it put the truck over 80".
Yup, and marker lights on the rear fender flares. - dodge_guyExplorer II

I took off the lens and painted them the body color to disguise them as much as I could.Never got stopped by LE, but I did get some funny looks at night as they shined thru the white paint and looked like ghost lights or something.
