Wrap the lock in electrical tape to keep the dirt out.
I just remove mine when I get to the campground and lock them up in the truck toolbox. The hitch itself has a locking pin too. - rgoldingExplorer

And why do you want to do this? - Community AlumniNot quite the same, but I used to use small padlocks on the slotted ends of the pins holding my 5th wheel hitch in the truck bed; never had an issue in the 6 years that I towed with them there.
- opnspacesNavigator IIIf you're talking about replacing the cotter pins with small padlocks I think it will be fine. All the cotter pins do is keep the pins from vibrating out of the hole.
The only downside I see is the fatter locks possibly contacting another part of the hitch if you turn tight. But you can check this by putting the bars in and locking the pins without a trailer attached. Then just swing the bars by hand and see if they hit anything. - HuntindogExplorerIt'll work fine so long as they don't get dirt etc. in the keyhole.
Towing on dirt or mud is probably a bad idea. - rode2nowhereExplorerI would think so, will probably stay there before a clip would
