Question for Toyota Tundra owners

I’m thinking about a Gen 3 5.7 V8 long bed 4 door 4x4 that is available to me.

I would match a (vintage) truck camper to it.

Couple questions:

What kind of weight do you Tundra owners carry regularly?

If you carry a camper what mpg do you see on what kind of driving?

Thanks

  • My signature says it all, I think. I have put lots of miles on Tundras since 2004 with only one issue and it was a pothole hit at 70mph. My fault, not the Tundra's.
  • Tundra update was slowed by Covid 19. Looking forward to normal times.
  • The last time Toyota made significant changes to the Tundra's engine/tranny/frame was in 2007. We owned both a 2011 and 2012 5.7. Both purchased new. Great, reliable trucks.

Depending on trim level, cab, and bed, payload varies between 1400-1700 lbs. Carry max payload, they sag just like any other truck carrying max payload.

    EPA MPG for the 5.7 4x4 is a non-competitive 13/17. Our 5.7 got 13-14 mpg in mixed city/suburb driving. 17 mpg at 75 mph empty. ~10 mpg towing a 6k TT at 60 mph.
  • I have a 2005 Tundra and an Outfitter Caribou pop-up camper. Specs for the latest model puts the weight at 2130 lbs. It works okay but I would feel better with a 3/4 ton truck. I added air bags and a rear stabilizer bar to mine which helps. Gas mileage went from about 17 to 11 mpg.
