Question on 1/2 ton truck

New here. This is probably been asked but I am look at buying at Slide in Camper. Problem is I have a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 4x2. Ive been looking at the travel lite 770. Just found a post that said it is heavier than advertised. I have a 6.5 bed. Any ideas on a camper that will work?
  • !/2 ton and truck camper is not a good mix for anything beyond a fancy shell. Definitely nothing with a bathroom. One of the lighter weight pop-up TCs will work but again no bathroom beyond possibly a porta-potie you use in the hallway.

EVERY RV whether it be a truck camper or what not is GOING to be heavier then the manufacturer claims.

Since your truck will tow way more then it can carry I would suggest a travel trailer if that will work for you. Much more room and you get a full bathroom.
  • Half-ton truck is generally not a good place to be where hauling a truck camper is concerned, especially a short bed crew cab half-ton. You will have to pick very carefully and will likely still be quite overloaded.
  • Truck usually have bigger payload than official rating, but over 90 percent of camper weight goes on rear axle, so you can't use front axle capacity.
Than remember that dry camper weight is just starting point.
  • All campers are heavier than you think/ are advertised. Trucks generally have a lot less payload than you thing / are advertised. Making a TC work on a 1500 is tough. Your 2wd so that helps on the weight some. If it's just you and you pack light you can probably make it work.
Have you weighed your truck? I'd load it with the people, pets, fuel, etc. you'll be carrying with the camper. Remove the tailgate and weigh it on a scale. Pay particular attention to the rear axle weight. That's the only way to know how heavy of a camper you can haul.
  • The dry weight on the Northstar Pop up is almost 1,000 pounds heavier than the Travel light.

Thank you for responding. I went to the Northstar site and I like the look. I can't find the weights on the 650 and 700s?
