Wife and I are looking to replace our 2006 Titan with something a little more hefty in towing capacity. We are looking at a 2008 Dodge Laramie 2500 Diesel with factory installed tow package. Wife is concerned that it has 88,000 miles on it. Our Titan has 73,000. I understand that Diesels are hardly broken in at 88K. Is the mileage a problem here?

I wouldn't be concerned with the mileage on the diesel. The Cummins 6.7L is a medium duty rated diesel (250k miles before rebuild). However, I would make sure that it is in good running condition and that there are no known problems with the turbo or injectors. 2007-2009ish 6.7L Cummins had some problems with the DPF (diesel particulate filters) getting filled up fast and if not properly taken care of might require a new one to be installed in short order. A lot of people were removing (deleting) the DPF (diesel particulate filter and EGR (exhaust gas recirculator) systems. It wouldn't pass a smog inspection in CA if it's missing. If you are buying it from a Dodge dealer then ask them for the options report and warranty record to see if anything was done under warranty. If you're not buying it from a Dodge dealer then PM me the VIN and I'll pull it for you and send it back. That way at least you'll know easily what rear axle ratio is in that truck amongst other things. Diesel engines are a little bit more expensive to work on should somthing go out so I would consider the purchase of an extended service contract as well if it fits the budget.

My only real concerns would be to be sure someone has not chipped it. That and be sure all updates have been done

IIRC the DPF issue that mrkoje is referring to was solved by a computer update. I would imagine that the truck in question has the update.2008 was a changeover year for steering upgrades (do an internet search for the 2008.5 steering upgrade). The Cummins CR motors are hard on injectors. They left the factory with what many believe as inadequate filtering. Many people are running aftermarket 2-micron filter kits. I wouldn't bat an eye at 88k on that truck (well, diesels in general if they look clean). The last gas truck I bought had 90k, and I sold it at 244k.

there is an EGR "cleaning" recommended at 67,500 miles, you might make sure the cleaning has been done.

Not one injector issue, only a water pump at a little over 100k.

Our 07.5 with the 6.7 has been trouble free. 6 years old and no problems but a water pump that was replaced under warranty.

The only real problems have been owners. People bought these things to use a grocery getters. The DPF systems simply are not up to he task for extended in town traffic use. If they are bought and used for their intended purpose there is no problems. Heck, i own what should be the worst of the worst a very early 6.7L. After a couple of software updates it has been perfect. Hauls my 13,500 pound fiver easily and still gets me 12.5 MPG doing it. Like i said earlier, as long as the truck has not been chipped and all the updates have been done I would not be afraid of it one bit. IF it is going to be driven as intended, ie worked hard.

What's the intended purpose... Does Chrysler have this documented? I can assure you the guys who are pursuing the nasty "class action" are trying to define "intended purpose". :S The dreaded P2563 CEL code! :W

Basically your driving recommendation is exactly what I recommended to the OP to mitigate the soot clogging problem, but the difference is I'm not recommending to purchase such truck. :R

Well mine is not an 08, a little older, an 01 5.9, but I just turned 260,000 miles and pull an 11,000# 5er in the Coast range of Oregon. Just remember, you will see an occasional Navastar shop, but you will see plenty of Cummins shops. This gives you a real option on service, Ram dealer, or Cummins Factory shop, something to think about.

Also when you pop the hood you can see the engine. Both sides!

Well mine is not an 08, a little older, an 01 5.9, but I just turned 260,000 miles and pull an 11,000# 5er in the Coast range of Oregon. 88K isn't a problem. Overall condition and maintenance does matter. As with anything used, check it over carefully. How much are they asking for it? Good luck.

Happy with ours we bought it used. We have had to do ball joints on it but it runs great. Driving on the hwy frequently and towing will keep the DPF clear. Very happy so far.
