DEF is here to stay to meet EPA Tier IV emissions standards.
Navistar tried to engineer a whole new heavy truck engine without it, and they scrapped the project--and had to buy Cummins engines for their over the road trucks.
Ford made the mistake of putting their DEF filler neck behind the same door as the diesel filler neck. A few customers have put DEF into their diesel tank, and it set up in the fuel lines and injectors like a rock. Insurance companies are paying $12K to replace the whole fuel system when that happens--body off repairs.
Anyone that has a diesel needs to pay very close attention when fueling their trucks as it's easy to put gasoline into the tank. They should also purchase diesel fuel from high volume gas stations that have good filter/water separators on their diesel pumps. And you can buy fresh DEF just about anywhere, including WalMart and national auto parts stores.
